Residential metal roofing is growing in popularity because it effectively protects your home against strong winds, rain, snow and sun. In addition, metal roofing is durable, energy-efficient, fire-resistant, long-lasting, not to mention stunning. Metal roofs come in a range of colors and styles so you can customize it to perfectly complement your home.
Temporary roofs are initially less expensive than installing a permanent metal roofing system, but they are certainly not the best investment. The risk of weather damage, loss of energy efficiency and cost of periodic roof repair or replacement, all add up to astronomical expenses and headaches over the long-term.
We’ve been told that the decisions we make today will affect us tomorrow…but how many purchasing decisions will affect us in 15, 30 or 60 years? The investment made in a metal roof will last at least that long, which is why it’s important to understand the balance between quality and cost beforehand.
Metal roofing benefits include reducing your energy bills from the first day your roof is installed. Metal roofing in both light and dark colors reflect heat. This keeps homes cooler in the summer and insulates during winter months, reducing energy bills. The secret is in the highly reflective and highly emissive paint, which can re-emit up to 90% of absorbed solar radiation. Many owners report energy savings of 20% or more.
When properly designed and installed, metal roofs can reduce energy consumption, providing cost savings and immediate return on your investment. ABC’s superior quality panels help extend the life of your home’s roof and our broad spectrum of colors, finishes, and gauges give you the beauty and comfort you expect.
The benefits are thanks to cool metal roofing’s high solar reflectance and high emissivity. The solar reflectance is used in determining ENERGY STAR® compliance. When solar reflectance is calculated with thermal emissivity, in accordance with ASTM E1980, the result is the solar reflectance index or SRI. SRI is stated in whole numbers from 0 to 100, with the higher numbers indicating better performance. Tests done at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) found that metal roofs painted with white coatings have SRIs from 71 to 82. By contrast, white asphalt shingles earn at maximum an SRI range of just 21 to 40.[3] This indicates cool metal roofs perform three to four times better than white asphalt shingles.
Metal roofing has a higher initial cost than other roofing materials; however, your metal roofing investment will save you time and money in the long term. Compared to asphalt shingles, metal roofing has a longer lifespan (15-18 years vs. 60+ years), requires only annual maintenance, and reflects heat, making it more energy efficient than a traditional asphalt roof. These benefits make metal roofing a better long-term investment for your home.
Investment grade metal shingles, on the other hand, are impervious to the elements that often destroy asphalt and many other roofing materials. Homeowners, who make an investment in a permanent metal roofing system, enjoy the benefits of long-lasting durability, energy savings and eye-catching beauty.
Properly installed, a metal roof should last as long as the house, sealing out water, surviving high winds, and easily shedding snow. Metal is resistant to fire, mildew, insects, and rot. Warranties vary widely, but most companies back their products for 20 to 50 years. Paint finishes typically have a 30-year limited warranty.
Compared to the weight of tile at 750 pounds per square (an area equal to 100 square feet) or concrete tile at 900 pounds per square, metal roofing is very lightweight. Most varieties run from 50 to 150 pounds per square.
Because of the material’s light weight, you can save on engineering and building the supporting structure. In fact, if you’re building a house or an addition, you can often downsize or reduce the number of roof support members.
Some types of metal roofing materials may be applied over an existing roof without the need for tear-off or additional structural support.
When comparing different materials, like wood, concrete, metal, plastic, or glass, metal easily stands out as the strongest and most durable. If properly installed, metal roofing is designed to withstand extreme weather and even fires.
Because metal roof materials are noncombustible, they typically have a Class A fire rating (the most fire-resistant rating). Just be aware that part of a roof’s overall classification depends on materials beneath the surface that could ignite in intense heat, too. Most metal roofs applied over a combustible material such as wood shingles have a lower, Class C rating for this reason. See notes under “Metal Roofing Drawbacks” regarding problems in the event of a house fire.
The most widely accepted standards for fire resistance in building materials are those of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. This non-profit organization founded in 1894 devotes itself to testing and to establishing fire safety standards.
Class Definitions:
Most metal roofing materials come in multiple-shingle sections or in 12- to 36-inch-wide panels. As accomplished contractors, we can install these quickly. If your roof is stripped off and a storm is on the way, shortening the process by a day or two may offer a critical advantage. Obviously, there are also considerable labor savings if you can ease and shorten the duration of roof installation.
The level of upkeep needed to maintain a metal roof is generally minimal, especially if the roof was correctly installed. General upkeep would include looking for leaves, branches, and other debris that could get stuck on the roof and in the gutters around twice a year and after strong storms. In the event that dirt or other stains do not come off with rain, there are methods to clean your metal roof. Also, a concealed fastener roof will generally have less upkeep than an exposed fastener metal roof.
Here are some tips to prolong metal roofs' performance.
